East of the Sun and West of the Moon

I painted this after reading Shadow and Bone.  I loved the fantasy world of Ravka so much, and all the rich Russian imagery and magic that flowed from the mind of Leigh Bardugo, I wanted to paint something that might come from that world.  After painting it, a friend wondered if it was from the Polar Bear King.  I realized, that yes, it very well could be!  I remembered that I had once read the story of East of the Sun and West of the moon, a Beauty and the Beast type tale that has a Polar Bear as the beast.  I love how myth repeats itself over and over in the minds of generation after generation, because we are living out the same stories over and over and trying to make sense of them as magically as we can: There is nothing new under the sun.  But maybe east of the sun and west of the moon!  So I’ve named the painting as such :)

I was originally reluctant to post this one, because it is so much an enjoyment catered for me and the world I’ve been in my mind, but then I remembered that usually when I am loving something, it is only because it is in the zeigeist already, and many others will enjoy it, too!  Let’s watch and see if this type of detailed, colorful imagery takes hold this winter… I want that outfit to be normal to wear out on the town!
